(More customer reviews)I've been purchasing Rip Curl watches for awhile now and as an avid salt water enthusiast these watches are well worth it.
My older Rip Curl watches were stainless steel and took very good beatings. Any watch on my wrist is going to take a good thrashing since I love to wear my watches everywhere I go. Whether it would be cast netting for bait or wading chest deep to get to the school my older watches were constantly exposed to salt water and sand almost every weekend. Even through all of those harsh environments the outer bezel, glass or any other of the watches main parts never scratched, discolored nor chipped. What failed on my previous Rip Curl watches were the bands, pins or clasps. My previous analogue Rip curl watch band failed and then the battery died. I decided to move on to a 3rd Rip Curl watch and try out the cheaper ABS plastic all digital Ocean trestle.
Function wise this watch has almost everything and avid fisherman could ask for. Moon phases, Tides, water height, chrono and alarm. The most difficult thing about setting up the watch was to find the preset beach the watch already had in its memory and do some math to accurately program the tide were I primarily launch my boat and fish. Set it and forget it. I've only had the watch in the salt water a couple of times but it seems to be honoring its predecessors quite well. The tide feature is fantastic giving you future tides, water heights and next tide times(a salt angler must). The moon phases aren't detailed separating wanings from last quarter's but you get a very close guestimate. The timers and alarms are very easy to operate and execute their functions flawlessly. Even the hourly chime is pleasant and not annoying. The watch itself isn't big and bulky like some others on the market and I'm a skinny guy.
I have one gripe and one concern. The gripe is the light. For me it is not long enough and on the water in the pitch black night I find myself constantly having to push the light button to keep the watch illuminated. 2-3 seconds for me isn't long enough when I'm trying to forecast tides. I get around this by pushing the light button every second while I'm planning my next move. My main concern is the longevity of the watch itself. Like I mentioned before I beat my watches up. I don't put them on just for dinner and a movie. I wear my watches doing everything like a casual outing, mowing my lawn, changing my oil etc. Recently, I was down inside my bilge of my boat replacing a pump and by the time I was done I looked at my watch.. I was shocked. I already acquired a nice scratch on the side of the main bezel. Unnoticeable to those who aren't looking closely but c'mon the non stainless competitors don't scratch this easy. I also was looking around the glass on the bezel and noticed several very small nicks and scratches. The glass itself is as crystal clear as the first day I received it. This is something that would have never happened with any of my previous stainless steel Rip curl watches. The features of the watch itself are fantastic but I just don't think this ABS plastic watch will stand the test of time and beating I'll put it through. I wish I would've stepped it up and purchased another stainless steel Rip Curl watch.
I recommend this watch to those who are accessory conscious while they are working. I also recommend this watch to those who are only would wear this watch casually with salt water hobbies. I do not recommend this watch to those like me who wear their watch everywhere doing everything and forget about it until you need the time or tide. Pony up the extra cash and get a stainless steel rip curl watch.
