Duracell 852-0217 MyPocket Charger for Cell Phones Review

Duracell 852-0217 MyPocket Charger for Cell Phones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little gadget is a very cool idea, but unfortunately it seems to trigger a fault protection if a cell phone tries to draw close to (or more) than 5V/0.5A out of it. I tried a bunch of different HTC phones and this little device seems unable to feed any juice into it. On the flip side, all bluetooth headsets I tried charge fine.
Also this thing only works with real batteries - it refuses to turn on if one feeds it NiMH rechargeables. Tried with Sony CycleEnergy, Sanyo Eneloop, Duracell rechargeables. It only wants real alkaline batteries. That's a pitty, since NiMH batteries have a lot more juice to feed into a gadget...

Garmin Rail Mount Adapter (Large) Review

Garmin Rail Mount Adapter (Large)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have a race bike with a light aluminum handle bar, it probably has a diameter of more than 25 mm. Then this mount is the one you need. It comfortably fits any handle bar with a diameter in the range of 25 to 32 mm. It comes with three rubber strips of different thickness to adjust to the proper size.
It is too bad that you need to purchase this mount on top of the bicycle mount that is delivered with the special clipped backing for your Garmin. The standard mount does not fit any rail with a diameter larger than 25 mm.
In my case, I switched bikes and my new bike had a wider bar. So I'm lucky to have a mount now on both the old and new bike. But if you start from scratch, and have wide handle bar, you are faced with two purchases.

Garmin Bicycle Mount for Forerunner 201 and Forerunner 301(010-10446-00) Review

Garmin Bicycle Mount for Forerunner 201 and Forerunner 301(010-10446-00)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this because the wrist strap on my Garmin 301 wasn't up to the rigors of cycling -- I had lost 3 pins in as many months because the stress on the pins from going over bumps and the like was too much. This mount has solved my problem quite nicely. It is a quality piece, definitely sturdy enough for road oriented cycling. I am a near daily bike commuter, about 20 miles each way. I ride a combination of streets and MUP, with rough pavement, tree roots and the occasional oversized pavement lip as my major obstructions. I don't hop curbs at speed, and I don't ride on unimproved trails -- I express no opinion as to this mount's ability for true off-road, but I'd be hesitant without some secondary security.
The one major issue is that I don't think this mount would fit easily on most road bike handlebars (I ride a drop bar hybrid with brifters and road style bars). The mount opening is sized for standard flat type bars, as far as I can tell, and while it appears that it would fit on the narrowest part of my bars, that's where the tape is, so without retaping my bars there isn't space.
I have this issue solved with one of my other purchases, a phone case with accessory bar which had a wider mount and fit over the edge of the bar tape, and cleared my shifter cable. The Garmin mount fits just fine on the accessory bar, and it is angled so I can read the big display well enough. I cannot, however, read the smaller displays without moving way out of position or stopping. This is not a problem for me, as I'm usually just tracking my date for later use, but if you want real-time review, you'd need a different mounting location. I think I could get the mount on the top of the bar if I needed to, but the effort involved in retaping would make me think twice.
Overall, though, a solid and functional piece of kit that is far better than wearing my Forerunner on my wrist while riding.

Garmin GSC 10 - Speed & cadence sensor Review

Garmin GSC 10 - Speed and cadence sensor

While I like the unit for the Foretrex (Garmin recommended) it has 2 issues you should be aware of. First, Foretrex is GPS speed only. That is, the wheel speed while sitting in a trainer is zero. No pick-up from spoke magnet. Second, if you have more tha one cadience device on different bikes you must do a MASTER FORETREX RESET to move between cadience devices(bikes). You do this by turning foretrex off then holding down ENTER AND POWER BUTTON at same time. Foretrex 401 only. Thank you. Love the device.

RCX5 SD Heart Rate Monitor Review

RCX5 SD Heart Rate Monitor
Average Reviews:

Been running 5Ks and sprint tri's through marathons and half-ironman races with my Garmin Forerunner 305 for years now and it served me well. But the RCX5 is AMAZING! Just got it the other day but I am already blown away. I'm a gear nerd so I've been anticipating getting my hands on one for about 6 months now. The display is great, the watch fits well, and the ability to monitor your heart rate on the swim is awesome. I'll let you know if anything should change my current feelings toward the RCX5, but it has been a blast so far. If you are a gear freak or are a hardcore heart rate trainer (I'm both) then this baby is for you!

Bought this one to replace the one that came with my Garmin 405 forerunner. I forgot to remove it from my laptop and snapped that first one in half.
At first I wasn't sure this was the right part, but after looking and comparing the part number from Garmin's website to this part number, it is the same ANT and it DOES work for my Garmin 405. Didn't have to do anything special, just hooked it up and it worked for uploading on the first try.
Saved me alot of money, this one was way cheaper than the one directly from Garmin

Garmin 305 Forerunner Review

Garmin 305 Forerunner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use mine for cycling and running, the direct link to see your workouts mapped on GOOGLE EARTH is FANTASTIC!!!! (the included software is far more stable than the junk Polar included with their HRM's.
Heart rate strap with replaceable battery is coded and comfortable. It's better in my opinion than the Polar products (of which I've owned three)
This is much better than the Forerunner 201 which I previously owned (locks on satellites 10 times faster) and I'd avoid the 405 unless you really want to use this watch as a normal day to day wristwatch (check out the 405 reviews)
One nice feature is being able to customize the display screens. Another review criticized the 305 for the numbers being too small to read while exercising. I don't have an issue but would point out that you can significantly increase the size of the display by simply displaying fewer fields.
My only complaint is that it's easy to leave it on and run the battery down - which is a bummer if you're just about to work out. I wish there was an "auto off" feature which would shut it down if it detects no movement or heart rate within an hour or so. Fortunately, with Li-Ion batteries, as little as a 10 minute charge gives you enough juice for a 90 minute run.
If you've found this review to be helpful, please let me know!

Garmin Edge 605 Bicycle Monitor with GPS Review

Garmin Edge 605 Bicycle Monitor with GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think that the previous reviews for the 605 are a bit harsh. Let me get right to the negatives of the product as I see it.
1. The route algoritm allows you to select an option where it diverts you around major highways and roads. While this works 90% of the time, every so often it will direct me right onto a major highway or traffic circle when there are better routes available.
2. Backlighting settings not being saved is a pain as the other reviewer mentioned
3. The straps that the 605 comes with to attach to your bike aren't strong enough. After a few rides my 605 tends to move around to much requiring constant re-adjustment, especially on bumpy roads. I plan on adding some velcro to the back which should solve the problem
4. The free Training Center software that you can use with the 605 is pretty much a waste. Outside of storing your rides and keeping a history of ride statistics, it's not worth the download.
5. The detailed street maps do not come standard with the unit. For $399 I was expecting them to and don't think Garmin made this point clear on their site.
Outside of the above, I really don't think that I could not recommend the 605. Its not perfect but it really does make riding easier when you don't have to mentally keep track of where you are or worry about getting lost.

Garmin has really upped the ante on the entire cycling computercategory with it's two new gps-enabled navigator/computers, the 705 and its younger sibling, the 605. These are true navigational aids with full-color maps and turn-by-turn directions in addition to advanced route-planning and saving capabilities. On top of that, the 705 adds heart rate and cadence monitors, a barometric altimeter, and wireless capability that lets you share routes and workout data with other riders instantly. Sleek and waterproof, with a 2.2-inch color screen that lets you customize what data you see and how you see it, these two devices help make the most of every ride.
The Power Of Location-Based Data Anyone who has used Garmin's original Edge 205 or 305 already understands the power that attaching location data to traditional measurements like distance, speed, time, calories burned, and heart rate can provide. Knowing exactly where you worked hardest, rode fastest (or most slowly) lets you tailor your workouts to improve to improve your riding skills for specific distances, conditions, and types of terrain. It gives a complete picture of how you interact with every portion of your ride.

Altitude is recorded using a barometric altimeter for the Edge 705. This accurate altitude data makes it much easier for cyclists to match their altitude profile with their speed, cadence, and heart rate during post-ride analysis. The Edge 605 gives a somewhat less precise altitude measurement via the GPS positioning system itself.
A First-Rate Bike Computer The Edge 605 automatically measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned and altitude. The 705 also track your heart rate, cadence, power (from optional ANT + Sport-enabled third-party power meters), climb and descent. Other nifty features include the following.

Virtual Partner lets you race a virtual competitor over a specified distance and speed.
Courses let you race against a previously recorded workout, so you can compare your current and past performances over the same ride.
Auto Pause pauses the timer when you slow down or stop and resumes when you speed up again, so you can focus on your ride.
Auto Lap automatically starts a new lap each time you pass a specified location or travel a preset distance
Click stick helps users navigate through the various options.
Full-Featured Navigation No more scratch paper paper-clipped to your handlebars. In addition to their cycling computer functions, The Edge 705 and 605 provide the same robust navigation as Garmin's vehicle navigators, with turn-by-turn spoken directions (turn left in 500 yards) and a 2.2-inch (diagonal) color display that shows maps in great detail. Both devices come pre-loaded with a built-in basemap, and a MicroSD card slot you can use to load new maps or store workout, course and ride data. Garmin has lots of street and topographic maps available for purchase and you can download courses and rides from Garmin or other riders at the Garmin Connect website. Both feature a high-sensitivity receiver that holds a signal under trees and near tall buildings and have a click stick for easy screen navigation.
Connectivity and "ANT + Sport" One of Garmin's most ambitious decisions has been to approach fitness devices as a total platform with their "ANT + Sport" connectivity system. All of Garmin's new fitness devices, including the Edge 605 and 705, the Forerunner 50 heart rate monitor watches, will interface wirelessly with any devices that are compatible wiht the "ANT + Sport" protocol, including devices from other manufacturers. Currently, Garmin the devices will pair with power meter from SRM or Quarq to measure power – torque and cadence for each leg at the pedals – which is often cited as a true indicator of an efficient ride. It's unclear what other manufacturers will buy into the ANT + Sport platform, but this kind of open connectivity with products from other companies offers a great deal of potential flexibility.

The wireless function also makes it easy to connect one Edge unit to another to share rides, courses and workout data.

Heart Rate and Cadence Monitors The Edge 705 heart rate monitor uses a robust wireless technology that eliminates cross-talk and interference and delivers real-time heart rate data exclusively to the user's device. This data is stored with each track point for post-workout analysis. The Edge 705 with speed/cadence sensor incorporates a self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor that mounts to the rear chain stay of the bicycle.

Be Part of A Community In 2007, Garmin acquired Motion-based, the largest shared repository of customer-generated gps-based routes, courses and maps. This was a significant move for Garmin to support the gps user community and bring a wealth of route options to gps users. With a simple connection to your computer, you can join a worldwide network of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts through Garmin Connect our new, one-stop site for data analysis an sharing.

You can also upload to optional Garmin Training Center software for further analysis. Garmin Training Center stores large quanities of workout and ride data. Some of the things you can do are

Review your workout data, including pace/speed, distance, time, calories burned; and if available, heart rate, cadence and detailed elevation.
View a detailed graph of your workout data, plotted over time or distance.
View a map of your workout that shows the exact path you traveled.

These are the exact same mounts that came with my Edge 500. However, there are TWO complete sets of mounts in each package. The description should have said this because I ordered 5 mounts and ended up with 10. Even Garmin's site shows a photo of one set not two. I agree with the other 1 star reviews. The mounting clip breaks after only about 3 months of use when taking the unit on and off your bike. Other people in my bike club have reported similar results and have had $500 Edge 705 units fly off their bike while riding!!! Come on, Garmin, get your act together and make something out of metal that is more durable. The 705 computer is absolutely great, but it is a travesty that it is attached with a 10 cent piece of plastic that can potentially cause the loss of the enitre computer while on the road!!!

Garmin Foretrex 301 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Garmin Foretrex 301 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the Garmin Foretrex 101 and it worked great until it got stolen. I have the 301 now and it works just as well. The only problem I had with the 101 was the strap. It was held onto the GPS unit with crappy watch pins. I'm in the military, so if you have to put a heavy ruck on and off quickly, and you get the ruck strap caught on the GPS, the unit would pop off the strap. Then, you are trying to find a tiny watch pin with NVGs on a mountain. Also, the strap that comes with it is just a bit too short, but the extension strap makes it too long. WTF?! It will barely fit on your wrist with nothing under it, but if you have a uniform on (ACU/BDU) you will have to use the extender and then it's too long and will move around.
For the 301 there is a better design to hold the strap onto the GPS. It uses screw in pins, so I think that problem is fixed and it shouldn't pop off. However, the strap length is still too short or too long. I am going to just buy a case where you can take the GPS and put it inside of a clear case and that has a Velcro strap.
I used the 101 on every mission in Afghanistan and it was really great to get quick grids of your location. Projecting points on the 101 and the 301 isn't that easy though. You can only choose distances at 100 meter intervals, so that's as accurate of grid as you will get. It's also not very easy to navigate the menu to get at the project waypoint screen. I just used it to quickly find out where I was, and for that it was fantastical.
The sensitivity of the receiver is awesome. You can pick up signals when it's sitting on the passenger seat of your car or when your in the woods walking. I ride mountain bike, and it seemed to work OK when I was under moderate cover at all speeds. When you get into really thick cover and you are going pretty fast the accuracy degrades a little, but it still tracks satellites. Your speed won't be that accurate though.
Hooking it upto a computer is easy too. It just loads as a USB mass storage device, so you don't need serial ports anymore. For military, I'm not sure if it will still be compatible with moving map on Falconview, haven't tried it.
I definitely recommend this. The only problem is the crappy strap that's not meant for human-sized wrists. On a bike mount, in a different case or attached to your body armor or whatever it's awesome.

If you are into keeping track of your cycling workouts, the Garmin Edge 305 is great. Just turn it on and start the timer. It keeps track of everything, including altitude and feet ascended and descended, percent of grade and calories. When you are done just plug it into a USB port on your pc and download all your stats. It even shows your route in Google Earth. The only two minor issues I have are the display isn't as crisp and clear as some newer lcd displays. It's ok but could be better. The other thing is the software doesn't let you export data into a spreadsheet. I got a factory refurb with heart rate and cadence for a great price. Could not tell from brand new.
